It's been a roller coaster nine seasons for fans of The X-Files. So, as the series winds down, we take a look back at the show's rise... and fall.
Season 1, 1993-94
Highlights The X-Files premières quietly on Sept. 10, 1993 to middling reviews (TV Guide rates it a 4 out of 10). Ratings Rank 111th*
Best Episode Arguably "Tooms" which featured the return of shape-shifter - and fan favourite - Victor Tooms.
Season 2, 1994-95
Highlights The show wins its first Emmy (for best title sequence) and the Golden Globe for best drama. The cult audience is building. Rank 61st
Best Episode "One Breath" which returns Scully to the fray after her alien abduction. The conspiracy begins to take shape.
Season 3, 1995-96
Highlights The show earns an Emmy nomination for best dramatic series. Rank 40th
Best Episode "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," a non-conspiracy episode which scores Peter Boyle an Emmy for his role as a psychic insurance salesman.
Season 4, 1996-97
Highlights Fox angers fans by moving timeslots from Fridays to Sundays, but the show takes off in the ratings. Another Emmy nomination for best dramatic series. Rank 12th
Best Episode The mythology bubbles with "Memento Mori" when we learn that Scully has cancer, possibly caused by aliens.
Season 5, 1997-98
Highlights The season's cliffhanger leads into The X-Files: Fight The Future feature film which grosses $85 million at the box office. In the fall, the show moves into syndication allowing new fans to catch up. Rank 11th
Best Episode The second half of "Redux" which focuses on Mulder's search for a cure for Scully and the death of Cancerman.
Season 6, 1998-99
Highlights The show is passed up again at the Emmys for best series. It won't get another shot. Rank 12th
Best Episode The beautifully filmed "Triangle" which has Mulder and Scully shifting time aboard the Queen Anne in the Bermuda Triangle.
Season 7, 1999-2000
Highlights Gillian Anderson wins the Emmy for best actress. After David Duchovny's complaints about the weather, The X-Files moves from Vancouver to Los Angeles. [Megan's note: The X-Files actually moved from Vancouver to Los Angeles in Season 6, not 7.] Rank 31st
Best Episode It doesn't get much better than the slam-bang season finale "Requiem" in which Mulder is abducted and Scully learns she's pregnant.
Season 8, 2000-01
Highlights The X-Files is snubbed at the Emmys. David Duchovny quits and Robert Patrick joins the cast. Rank 31st
Best Episode "Per Manum." Scully gets right back to business, trying to get to the bottom of the alien fertilization conspiracy.
Season 9, 2001-02
Highlights Producers scale back Anderson's work and introduce Annabeth as Agent Reyes. Midway through the season, creator Chris Carter announces it will be the last year. The Lone Gunmen die. Rank 74th (as of April 23).
Best Episode None so far, though the two-hour series finale will likely change that as it promises a once-and-for-all conclusion to the grand conspiracy as well as the return of David Duchovny as Fox Mulder.
* Note: "Ratings Rank" indicates how the show fared compared to its competition that year.
