BACK TO THE X-FILES: CHRIS CARTER, PART THREE

From the Official Fan Club Newsletter September 2004

In the third and final part of our Chris Carter interview, Chris discusses a subject that's been long on the minds of X-Philes everywhere--the next X-Files movie! As you might expect from the former exec producer of one of TV's most secretive shows, his lips were fairly well sealed, but a few intriguing tidbits did manage to surface.

Where does the next X-Files movie currently stand?
It's funny you should bring it up--I just had breakfast the other morning with David [Duchovny] to discuss it. We have an idea that we like a lot, and I hope to speak with Gillian soon about it. As soon as we get all the contracts together and all the details figured out, it looks like it could happen.

Will the storyline pick up where the series left off? What will the involvement of Doggett and Reyes be?
I'd rather not speak specifically about what the storyline will be, because anything could change as the script and the story evolve toward production. I also want the fans to be as surprised and thrilled by the film as they were about the series every week, and I feel as though keeping things under wraps definitely contributes to that feeling.

Any idea when the film would start shooting or be released?
It's too early to say at this point. There's still so many details to be ironed out and a lot of that is going to be dependent on the schedules of our actors.

Harsh Realm and Millennium have hit DVD--now what about The Lone Gunmen?
I'm not sure. I'd love to see it happen, though. That's a series that's very close to my heart. I think some of the work we did on that show was extremely fun, and I'd love to see it on DVD like this.

Have you ever thought about returning to series television?
If the right idea came along, I might consider returning. It's such a tough grind to get into that I think I'd really have to feel passionately about the series I were working on to go back into it. I've been through it already on The X-Files and my other series, sometimes doing more than one show at the same time, and so I have a very real idea of the toll it takes on your life. So I guess the short answer is, maybe. [Laughs]

What do you miss the most about The X-Files?
The people. Definitely the people. We were able to assemble such a top-notch cast and crew of folks that were so talented and worked at such a high level. It was amazing to be able to share a project with them all. By the end, we had perfected the production down to such a smooth science that as hard as the work still was, it was also a great pleasure.

Many thanks to Milady Flores for helping set up the interview, and to Chris Carter for spending some of his valuable time with us!
