THE E FILES

WHO: David Duchovny

MOVIE: Evolution, a sexy sci-fi comedy in which Duchovny - best known for eight-year-run on The X-Files - plays a college professor who discovers that a crashed meteor is actually a spacecraft. Wait, *another* alien project? "That was just an unhappy coincidence," says Duchovny. "The fact that it had aliens in it didn't make me go 'Yeah!'"

MISCHIEF MAKER: Prankster Duchovny kept things lively on the set with costars Julianne Moore, Orlando Jones and Seann William Scott. "[Scott] was out with his girlfriend," Duchovny recalls, "and he reached into his coat to pay for some ice cream and came up with a handful of two-week-old mashed potatoes."

PERSONAL HISTORY: Duchovny, 40, grew up in New York. He graduated from Princeton in 1982 with a degree in English literature and was studying for his Ph.D. at Yale when he took up acting to pay his bills, appearing in a Lowenbrau beer commercial. He married actor Tea Leoni in 1997, and they have a 2-year-old daughter, Madelaine West.

UP NEXT: "It's been a long road of work and now I've blocked out some time for myself," he says. "I want to figure out what I want to do with the next decade. I'm on a 10-year-plan."
